More than anyone, Terrence Malick has a gift for making films that feel like real life.

I don’t mean they depict life realistically, stripped down to what becomes a documentary of painful hypotheticals. I mean they operate as life operates—mystically, with moments of melodrama, in unspoken whispers, with music in all the wrong places, signifying all the wrong things.

Film, as Malick makes it, is beautiful. It it is tragic. It is the cinema of the interior.

Tree of Life comes out May 27th.
