passed over

Late in Steven Johnson’s book, Where Good Ideas Come From, he tries to paint a picture of the average inventor, via their common characteristics.

It’s just a few sentences; he doesn’t spend a lot of time on it, which is probably why he glosses over—or simply doesn’t delve into—a point that I found intriguing: one trait of these inventor-types was that they were all “well-to-do.”

Which makes sense; inventors need disposable time and income with which to tinker around. Scraping by isn’t conducive to taking long walks, long baths, and big risks on DIY devices that may or may not ever work—or be worth anything.

But it does make you wonder: What would the world be like if people of less (conventional) means had the chance to invent things? What would they create?
